It's been an interesting month in pens. Having the chance to review the Duofold replicas of Chris Thompson has, of course, been a chief reason for this. These pens are amazing, in every sense vintage Duofolds, except, of course, that they aren't. Vintage, that is. The choice of materials is stunning, and whatever you might choose, you end up with a wonderful writing experience.

We got our hands on the stainless steel version a couple of months ago, and while that was an eye opening experience in itself, it took a visit with Chris in person at the LA show to ensure the maximum in elevation of the eyelids. In the feature on the Thompson pens, you can see the wide variety of materials he has put to use, and in the review, we took an in depth look at two new versions being offered, the Mandarin and the Big Red. These two are in material that is an exact match for the vintage colors. While they use modern nibs and feeds, the effect is exactly as a vintage pen.

Image2Aside from the joy involved in looking at and using the Thompson pens, we're especially heartened at the thought that there are still a few craftsmen alive in this computerized age.The pens of Chris Thompson, whether he continues at his present pace, or begins full scale production, prove that it's still possible to get a good value for your money in a modern pen. Even if you do have to go back to a vintage design!

As you may have noticed, we've added one of those nasty 'ol legal type disclaimers on the contents page. All the images and text in Stylophiles are copyright, and the property of Stylophiles and Penlovers. Apparently, we've had some trouble with images showing up elsewhere, being used for commercial purposes. Obviously, this has to be a no-no.

Image3On the other hand, we do realize that there might be occasions on which it would be entirely appropriate to share images and text. All we ask is that you ask permission before copying the material.

Material.... Speaking of material, another large part of the fun in this last month has been in going through and formatting past issues, or at least those we've managed to scrape together. It's amazing the amount of raw material we've put together so far. In setting up the year of 1999, we've amassed quite a list of articles.

MB Meisterstuck, 1950s vs. 1990s, Visconti Stylograph, Sheaffer Snorkel, Sheaffer Aspen, Visconti Voyager, Hero Pens, 60 Years of Pelikan, Sheaffer Tuckaway, Chiltons, The Joy of Flex, Levenger True Writer, and a long list of others.

And this is just one year! Odd, it didn't seem like that much as we were doing it. As soon as we can, we hope to complete the finicky stuff, cleaning up, formatting, and so forth, and make this material available.
